A. Raulin’s lavish brass planter from the late 19th century, which is a prime example of Dinant, Belgium’s renowned dinanderie craftsmanship. Stylized lion or dragon-head handles lend mythical grandeur, and the bowl-shaped body, flared at the rim, is embellished with elaborate embossed floral motifs, including a central rose blooming amid swirling leaves and stems. This piece, which rests on three claw feet, strikes a balance between Victorian opulence and Art Nouveau’s organic fluidity.

As seen here, Dinant’s brass craftsmen, who have been renowned since the Middle Ages, added aristocratic elegance to everyday items. This planter’s sculptural metalwork elevated interior spaces while protecting surfaces as it held potted plants. Perfect as a striking accent for conservatories, mantels, or décor with a period feel, or for collectors of European decorative arts.
